Chelsea found it tough to get past Roma in The Champions League Group A tie at Stamford Bridge. John Terry's headed goal in the 78th minute separated the two sides. It was a disappointing first half which didn't live up to pre-match expectation and produced very few clear cut chances. After the break, Chelsea started to show bits of their attacking quality with Frank Lampard coming close with long range efforts. It was only a matter of time when Man Of The Match John Terry found the net from Frank Lampard's in swinging corner. It leaves Chelsea 3 points clear at the top of Group A and Roma are in a Uefa Cup spot after the opening three games.

Aston Villa started off their Uefa Cup Group F campaign with a well earned 2-1 victory over Dutch Champions Ajax. Villa got off to a flying start in the 8th minute when Ashley Young's corner met the head of Martin Laursen. However their joy was shortlived when Ajax got back on level terms in the 22nd minute through Vermaelen's powerful header from a telling Urby Emanuelson corner. But Villa were back in front before half time when Ashley Young's sliced half volley found it's way to Gareth Barry who slotted it in the bottom corner. Villa went on to win the game 2-1.

Sunderland beat their old enemy Newcastle United on their own patch for the first time in 28 years. Djibril Cisse fired the Wearsiders into the lead on 20 minutes after Steed Malbranque cut in from the right and his cross-shot found Cisse who was in the right place to stab home his 3rd goal for the club. But the lead was short-lived when Geremi's freekick found Shola Ameobi who was unmarked at the far post and his powerful header slipped through the hands of Martin Fulop who was stepping in for the injured Craig Gordon. It was left to Keiran Richardson who was very unlucky in the previous game against Fulham with 2 of his freekicks. His magnificent strike left Shay Given with no chance and won the game in the 75th minute for the Mackems in front of a sell out crowd at the Stadium Of Light. Sunderland could have increased the lead late on with Kenwyne Jones coming close on his return from injury and man of the match Cisse hitting the post after a wonderful effort. Dont forget to mention that joey barton did an amazing job taunting the mackems and deserves a medal for it.
